Black Diggers | Arts Centre Melbourne

[The link didn't work.  Also posted to Dunkelsitz, another Facebook page that may become a Blog.]

Much more than entertaining theatre, Black Diggers is a masterful exposition of the ANZAC spirit as well as telling an important part of Australian Aboriginal history. Originally from Sydney, it is appropriate that Black Diggers was staged in Melbourne on ANZAC day as it embodies all the elements we learn from the most noble of defeats at Gallipoli, including duty and sacrifice as well as the birth of national pride in Australia and mateship. More significantly, the play restores the forgotten history of the Aboriginal men who served their country despite being rejected as citizens.

“. . the culture of the political Left has enabled terrorism.”

“. . the culture of the political Left has enabled terrorism.” This opinion piece by Jennifer Oriel is a well reasoned description of how opposition to “any attempt to link jihadi terrorism with anything remotely connected to Islam of any variety” leads to greater radicalisation.” However, New Whig’s centrist view is like trying to balance on a seesaw, where a move one way risks sliding into political correctness that can ends with support for Hamas’s Jew-haters, while the other way can lead to rejection of halal-certification because it might finance terrorism and efforts to prevent Muslims from integrating.
Guilty on all charges. When the Boston bombing trial jury handed down their verdict against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev last week, the courtroom was silent. The…

Queen Camilla

What a deceptive headline! It would be more accurate to say that opposition to HRH becoming queen is falling, having dropped from 75% to 55%. As Her Majesty is likely to reign another decade, by then opposition to Queen Camilla will have dropped to insignificance. New Whig has always supported the Australian Monarchy, admires the Prince of Wales and will welcome Queen Camilla when the time eventually comes. In a few months The Queen will become the longest reigning British Monarch, but it will take another decade to equal France's Louis XIV, Europe's longest.
Most Britons do not want the Duchess of Cornwall to become queen, a new poll has found. Some 55% of people are against Camilla taking the title if her husban...

Israel praised for minimising civilian casualties

A task force of several retired American military officials says Israel “systemically applied established rules of conduct that adhered to or exceeded the Law of Armed Conflict,"' But will this be enough to counter the anti-Semitic propaganda aimed at de-legitimising Israel, including from the UN?
JNS.org – A new report on last summer’s Gaza war praises Israel’s efforts to minimize civilian casualties. The report, titled “2014 Gaza War Assessment:…

The Criminal Justice System is a growth industry,

The forthcoming killing of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran continues to horrify the Australian public, but the cause of this travesty of justice escapes most people. It is the ever-failing “war on drugs” that is the problem. The Criminal Justice System is a growth industry, as evident in this latest splurge by the Victorian Government. It will not reduce the “scourge”, but inevitably exacerbate the problem because of the inevitable consequences of prohibition. Certainly, the death penalty does deter some people, but it is clearly not a total deterrent, because obviously there continue to be sufficient people who think they will get away with it to keep the illegal drug trade prospering. Every time a “drug lord” is caught, a gang war follows and there are plenty of deputies ready to take over, each more ruthless than their predecessor. While the Lawyers and crime bureaucrats prosper as well as the untaxed, unregulated drug traders themselves, the situation will continue to become more of a social problem. Meanwhile, these two young men will die, along with the many others who suffer as a result of this misplaced law. When will society put the wowsers in their place, accept that recreational drugs will always be popular, and regulate them instead of distorting the market with a failed prohibition that results in far worse problems that are caused by the drugs themselves?
MORE drug and booze buses, needle exchanges and police crackdowns on drug labs will be the key strategies to tackle the scourge of ice use in Victoria.

Prince Philip's knighthood, a good thing at the wrong time in the wrong way.

The timing, on Australia Day, that shocked me. It was bound to draw the anti-British republicans. Already a Commander of the Order, it was right and proper to elevate His Royal Highness to the Knighthood new it is reintroduced. But it should have been done at a better time, like on HRH's birthday in context of praise for his achievements. We now see that Mr Abbott is not just out of touch with the Electorate, but does not care. He now says he has changed and will listen, but even if he can and does, it may be too late to save him.
Prime minister also says he was not aware of growing backbench dissent and appears to blame Philip Ruddock for not alerting him
