Tough on Crime

The only people who benefit from "tough on crime" are the lawyers and others in the profitable business of "criminal justice". It is the same principle behind strict sharia and should have no place in a democratic society that regards all people as individuals of worth.
Soaring recidivism rates reflect a failure to rehabilitate prisoners and a lack of spending on programs that prevent crime, minister says.

What it Means to be "Australian"

We celebrate every culture in our multicultural society but what it means to be "Australian", because we still don't know what that means. The only true Australians are the Aboriginal people, but their renewed cultural vigour has isolated them more from the rest of us. No matter how interested or knowledgeable we might be about Aboriginal Cultures, without direct descent, even slight, and acceptance by particular language groups we are not and can not be Aboriginal. Australia Day celebrates the start of British Law and Culture on this land but that has been devalued by the misguided Republicans. We still have a third-world economy, based on primary products, and the sports and arts at which we excel are mostly international affairs. Worst perhaps is the way we still try to obliterate the natural landscape, poisoning the endemic wildflowers from our suburbs and plant colonial, British gardens, ironically sometimes with hybrid "natives". Despite all that, it is still the best place in the world to live, even with pesky, interfering governments.
From a giant Aussie picnic to a street food festival and synchronized fireworks display, Australia Day in Victoria promises a diverse program.

Je suis Charlie

Je suis Charlie.

New Whig has always been respectful of Islam and its Prophet. However, we deplore the killing of people exercising free speech. While we would not say it, we uphold the right of others to do so.
Mahmoud Abbas of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority is an utter hypocrite to join the protest march.

Hamas is the same sort of terrorist organisation as al-Qa'ida, Boko Haram and all the other radical Islamists. The attacks on Israel, targeting civilians and the racist propaganda they promote including the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement are equivalent to the attacks in Paris, Sydney and so on.

Moslem leaders claiming tolerance and respect for their religion and their prophet on the basis they respect other religions is farcical when compared to the genocidal program to exterminate Israel and wipe out all Jews from the area and their policy that no Jew, in a settlement or otherwise, can live in a future “Palestine”. Christians are equally badly treated.

When will the “progressives” wake up to this and stop siding with the anti-women, totalitarian regimes that adopt radical Islamist Sharia as their law. Is anti-Semitism so ingrained even in atheists, that their hatred of Israel supplants their opposition to totalitarianism.

Islam is a one of the world’s great religions. However they have an internal crisis in confronting modernity and existing in a global world. We hear regular condemnation of terrorism from some Moslem community leaders, but they do not appear to do anything to curtail the radical imams inculcating hate in young people. This is a world problem now, but the solution must come from within the Islamic community. Failure to do so will inevitably end in terrible global conflict.

Genocide

When the Palestinians join the International Court, they should be tried for Genocide. Let the world finally see they are equivalent to the worst terrorist Islamists.
Barely 24 hours after the Palestinian Authority submitted its application to join the International Criminal Court (ICC,) the Fatah movement of PA President…
