Winner-takes-all politics is unfair to everyone but a bare
majority. Especially when the large
minority consists of a range of diversity, while the winning majority tend to
be a cohesive whole. Social attitudes
towards Sexual Relationships used to be similar, with the title “marriage” the
exclusive use of the majority sexuality, heterosexuality, in a winner-takes-all
scenario. That is changing and the
rights of minorities is being acknowledged and included in our Social Systems.
More than a third of people voted for a Minority Party or
Independent in the last Senate Election.
Most just wanted someone who was not of the Big Parties, and did not
particularly care whom. The present
intention to change Voting Rules is unfortunate. It says something about the Greens that they
support it, showing they are a Big Party, not a genuine “Alternative”, but they
have always been in the Bernie Sanders/Jeremy Corbin mould, trapped in an idealistic
mindset that elevates social conformity (equality) over the individual.
The Far Left and the Far Right accept a pitched battle
between there extreme ideologies anticipating victory will bring total control,
even if it see-saws between the polarised political parties. What neither can tolerate is the Centre, that
is leaking away the moderates from supporting either extreme. Certainly, many Independents and Minor
Parties are as extreme in some of their policies as are the Big Parties, but
they bring alternative visions and prevent monopolies as well as ensuring that
minority voices are heard and minority rights are upheld, even if those minorities
are not their minority. If some
minorities can exist, then it is easier for all minorities, but if visible
minorities are excluded from the political process it effectively eradicates
minorities from Social Processes of Regulation and Law, and leads to Social
Repression.
