At last, Irish/Australians are catching up.

Greg Sheridan was born a Republican in a fanatically anti-British family.  Like many, an Australian Republic was an act of faith for him, like the beliefs taught by the Church.  Now he says he is close to "joining that select but growing group -- republicans for a constitutional monarchy."

This is the issue that put New Whig at odds with other groups that claimed to be in the political centre.  It was evident from the debates leading up to the referendum that such a change was costly, unpredictable and of no actual benefit but with a lot to lose.  It has taken this long for the message to seep through to the more fanatical and irrational supporters of Constitutional Change for the sake of out-dated ideology.
